Western Institute of Technology at Taranaki
School Overview
Western Institute of Technology at Taranaki (WITT) was established in 1972 and is located in the Taranaki region on the west coast of the North Island. It is the region’s principal public vocational education provider and is now part of the Te Pukenga national polytechnic network. The institute is known for its practice-centred teaching philosophy, emphasising the close integration of theory and hands-on application so that students develop strong practical skills and workplace readiness before graduation.
WITT uses small class sizes, and all teaching staff hold master’s degrees or higher with extensive front-line industry experience, particularly in nursing and engineering. The institute maintains close partnerships with both Taranaki-based and international businesses, providing students with well-developed internship and employment pathways.
The Taranaki region enjoys a mild climate, sweeping coastlines, and the magnificent Mount Taranaki. Living costs are significantly lower than in Auckland and other major cities, making it an ideal choice for students seeking a quiet study environment and excellent value for money. As a fully government-funded public institution, WITT offers competitive tuition fees along with various scholarships and financial assistance to reduce the financial barriers to study. LETU recommends WITT to students who want an immersive small-town New Zealand experience while developing strong hands-on vocational skills.
