Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology
School Overview
Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) was established in 1905 and is one of New Zealand’s oldest public tertiary institutions. It holds Category 1 status (the highest rating) from NZQA and is now part of the Te Pukenga national polytechnic network.
NMIT is located in the Nelson and Marlborough regions on the northern tip of the South Island — the sunniest part of New Zealand, with over 2,500 hours of sunshine per year. The institute is known for small-class, practice-oriented teaching led by industry experts and experienced academics. In a 2019 student satisfaction survey, 94% of students rated their courses, teaching, and overall experience positively.
NMIT’s signature programmes are closely aligned with local industries. The Marlborough region is New Zealand’s largest wine-producing area, contributing roughly 77% of national wine output, and the institute’s viticulture and winemaking programmes benefit from this exceptional regional advantage. In 2020 the New Zealand government invested NZ$3.79 million to establish the New Zealand Wine Research Centre at NMIT. The aquaculture programme boasts a 100% graduate employment rate, and the aviation engineering programme is delivered at the Royal New Zealand Air Force base. LETU recommends NMIT to students interested in wine, aquaculture, or aviation engineering who also appreciate the lifestyle of a sunny, relaxed town.
