School Overview

Universal College of Learning (UCOL) was founded in 1902 and is one of New Zealand’s oldest public polytechnics. Fully government-funded, the institute is now part of the Te Pukenga national polytechnic network. UCOL operates four campuses in the central North Island and enrols approximately 6,400 students, including international students from 55 countries.

UCOL is known for small class sizes and a student-centred educational philosophy, ensuring every student receives ample individual attention and personalised mentoring. The institute is equipped with specialist facilities and advanced technology that exceed industry standards, providing first-class practical training environments for nursing simulation, art and design, information technology, and more. UCOL maintains deep industry partnerships with local businesses: the Bachelor of Applied Management requires students to complete at least 400 hours of industry projects, and IT and design students undertake industry placements in their final year. Campus Locations

UCOL has four campuses in the central North Island, all located in the geographic heart of New Zealand with easy access to Wellington, Tongariro National Park, and more:

1. Palmerston North Campus (Main Campus)

• Location: Central Palmerston North, corner of King Street and Princess Street.
• Highlights: UCOL’s largest teaching centre, situated in a lively university city. Complete facilities include a library, health centre, careers centre, and student accommodation. The city holds WHO Safe Community accreditation and is a two-hour drive from the capital, Wellington.

2. Whanganui Campus

• Location: Central Whanganui, 16 Rutland Street.
• Highlights: The campus blends historic buildings with modern industrial facilities, located on the banks of the Whanganui River. The city is renowned for its rich arts, theatre, and music traditions.

3. Masterton Campus

• Location: Central Masterton, Wairarapa region, 143-159 Chapel Street.
• Highlights: A spacious, park-like campus offering a comfortable and pleasant study environment. Masterton is famous worldwide for its annual Golden Shears sheep-shearing competition.

4. Levin Campus

• Location: Levin, 160 Oxford Street, near State Highway 1.
• Highlights: A recently renovated modern campus with the latest classrooms and teaching equipment, adjacent to Te Takere cultural and community centre.
