Wellington Institute of Technology & Whitireia (WelTec & Whitireia) was established in 1986 and is a fully government-owned public tertiary institution. Headquartered at its Porirua campus, the institute also operates campuses in central Wellington, Kapiti, and Auckland, serving over 16,000 domestic and international students.

The institute offers more than 120 programmes, ranging from six-month certificates and two-year diplomas to full bachelor’s degrees. Fields of study include business management, information technology, health sciences, art and design, and English language education. The curriculum is designed on the British education model with a strong emphasis on vocational training and employment outcomes, ensuring that what students learn is closely aligned with real industry needs.

Teaching staff are experienced professionals and academic experts who deliver small-class instruction, giving every student personalised attention. Campus Locations

The institute has four campuses across the greater Wellington region and Auckland, each with its own character:

  1. Porirua Campus (Main Campus)
  • Location: Porirua Harbour, approximately 20 km from central Wellington.
  • Highlights: The institute’s largest teaching base, surrounded by beautiful scenery and close to several beaches ideal for swimming, surfing, and kayaking. Nearby amenities include a golf club, banks, shopping centres, art gallery, sports arena, and railway station. Home to the Bachelor of Applied Business programme.
  1. Wellington City Campus
  • Location: Central Wellington, near Parliament House.
  • Highlights: Specialises in retraining and professional development courses for working professionals. The prime location is ideal for combining study with employment.

  • Location: Kapiti region, nestled among rolling hills.
  • Highlights: Offers a tranquil study environment, perfect for students who prefer a quieter campus atmosphere.

  • Location: Auckland’s commercial district.
  • Highlights: Modern facilities delivering teaching quality on par with the Wellington campuses. Offers accelerated study options — students can complete a two-year programme in eighteen months through Summer School, or transfer to the Wellington campus to continue degree studies.
