Tai Poutini Polytechnic
School Overview
Tai Poutini Polytechnic (TPP) is located on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island and is a public vocational institute renowned for outdoor education, adventure tourism, and specialist crafts. It is now part of the Te Pukenga national polytechnic network. The institute serves approximately 6,000 full-time and part-time students each year, offering qualifications from certificates through to degrees.
TPP’s greatest strength is its deep connection with the unique natural resources of the West Coast. The jade and hard-stone carving programme takes advantage of the West Coast’s status as the primary source of New Zealand jade (Pounamu) — a truly one-of-a-kind programme nationwide. Outdoor education and adventure tourism courses make full use of the South Island’s spectacular glaciers, mountains, and rainforests, with popular specialisations such as ski patrol. Mining, quarrying, and agriculture programmes are similarly aligned with the region’s core industries.
The institute uses small class sizes, with teaching teams comprising both industry experts and academics, emphasising a “learn by doing” philosophy. TPP maintains close partnerships with West Coast businesses and employers, tailoring training programmes to local economic needs. Teaching takes place not only on the Greymouth and Westport campuses but also at field sites throughout the region. Tuition fees are relatively low, and various scholarships are available. LETU recommends TPP to students who love the outdoors and are interested in unique fields such as jade carving or adventure tourism.
