Open Polytechnic of New Zealand
School Overview
The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand (OPNZ) was founded in 1946 and is the country’s oldest and largest distance and online education provider. It is now part of the Te Pukenga national polytechnic network. Unlike traditional polytechnics, OPNZ operates primarily through online learning — students can complete qualifications from certificates through to bachelor’s degrees entirely via the institute’s purpose-built online platform, without attending a physical campus.
OPNZ’s curriculum spans popular fields including business management, engineering technology, education, psychology, and information technology. Courses are closely aligned with industry needs, and the teaching team combines experienced academics with industry practitioners. Each online student is assigned a dedicated learning adviser who provides tutoring, technical support, and academic guidance throughout their studies, ensuring the quality and experience of distance learning is never compromised.
The institute’s greatest advantage is extreme flexibility in time and location — students can study from anywhere in the world at their own pace. This makes OPNZ particularly suitable for working professionals, students with family commitments, and international students who cannot reside in New Zealand long-term. Tuition fees are competitive compared with traditional on-campus institutions, and the institute offers scholarships and financial aid. LETU recommends OPNZ to students who want to earn a recognised New Zealand qualification on a flexible schedule without disrupting their work or lifestyle.
