The University of Canterbury (UC) is New Zealand’s second-oldest university and a leading public research institution, with particular strengths in engineering, business, and education.

Founded in 1873 in Christchurch, the largest city on the South Island — known as the Garden City — the university is set in a safe and liveable environment.

Established by scholars from Oxford and Cambridge, Canterbury is the birthplace of engineering education in New Zealand. Its earthquake engineering programme ranks among the world’s best, and its Triple Crown accredited business school is widely recognised internationally. Graduate employment rates are the second-highest in New Zealand.

Campus Locations

The University of Canterbury operates from a single campus:

Ilam Campus (Main Campus)

  • Location: Ilam, western Christchurch, approximately 15 minutes’ drive from the city centre.
  • Highlights: Spanning 76 hectares, it is one of New Zealand’s largest single-site campuses. Following extensive post-earthquake reconstruction, all teaching facilities have been upgraded to brand-new, state-of-the-art buildings. The campus is located near Hagley Park and the Christchurch Botanic Gardens.
