What Is the Green List

The Green List is a shortage occupation list published by Immigration New Zealand (INZ), identifying occupations that are critically needed for the country’s development. Applicants in listed occupations benefit from a simplified process with no points requirement, and in the fastest cases, can proceed directly to residence.

The Green List is divided into two tiers:

• Tier 1 — Straight to Residence: Highly scarce occupations where holding a job offer allows applicants to apply directly for residence.
• Tier 2 — Work to Residence: Shortage occupations that require the applicant to first work in New Zealand on a work visa for 24 months before applying for residence.

Eligibility Requirements

1. Hold a job offer from a New Zealand employer in a Tier 1 listed occupation
2. Meet the relevant qualification, registration, or licensing requirements for the occupation
3. Meet the salary threshold (some occupations have a minimum annual salary requirement)
4. Pass English language, health, and character checks

• Architects, Civil / Structural / Electrical / Mechanical Engineers
• Doctors (multiple specialties), Registered Nurses, Midwives
• Veterinarians, Medical Laboratory Scientists
• Senior ICT roles (ICT Manager, Security Specialist, Architect, etc.)

Work to Residence

Eligibility Requirements

1. Hold a job offer from a New Zealand employer in a Tier 2 listed occupation
2. Have worked in that role on a work visa (e.g. AEWV) for at least 24 months
3. Meet the salary threshold and industry qualification requirements
4. Pass English language, health, and character checks

• Automotive Technicians, Welders, Mechanical Repair Workers
• Selected ICT roles

Application Process

1. Eligibility Assessment: Our licensed advisers confirm whether your occupation is on the list and which tier applies
2. Credential Preparation: Qualification recognition, professional registration, English language results, and employer support letter
3. Visa Application
   • Tier 1: Apply directly for a Resident Visa
   • Tier 2: First apply for a work visa, then apply for residence after 2 years of employment
4. Approval and Settlement: Once approved, you can enter New Zealand and settle

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What if my occupation is not on the Green List? You can pursue the 6-Point System pathway instead. The Green List and 6-Point System run in parallel and are not mutually exclusive.

Q2: Do I have to work for the same employer for the full 2 years under Tier 2? Generally, you need to have worked in the same occupation category for 2 years. A change of employer is possible, but it must comply with INZ rules.

Q3: Does the Green List change over time? Yes. INZ adjusts the list periodically based on labour market demand. We recommend consulting an adviser to verify the latest list before applying.
